Loudspeaker – Crossover Control

Step 1 – Loudspeaker Crossover Control

Loudspeaker Crossover ControlThis setup will assist you in measuring the frequency, time and phase response of a loudspeaker.

If you are new to WinMLS, load the setup Sound System_Adjust Before Performance. This will explain how to set the sound card and to set the levels etc.

It is recommended to perform the measurement in an anechoic chamber, but it can also be done outdoors or an as large room as possible.

Click the Next > button to continue.

Step 2 – Positioning

PositioningPosition the loudspeaker as far away from reflecting surfaces as possible (floor, walls and ceiling).

Position the microphone at about 1 meter distance from the loudspeaker and at middle height. (If the loudspeaker is large the microphone should be positioned at a greater distance than 1 meters.)

Step 3 – Loudspeaker Connections

Loudspeaker ConnectionsIf you have a loudspeaker with an active crossover filter, you can measure the response of each loudspeaker element by connecting directly to the loudspeaker, or measure the combined response by connecting before the amplifier(s).

If you have a loudspeaker with a passive crossover, you may only be able to measure the combined response. But the loudspeaker may have two inputs (for biamp'ing), so you may be able to measure high and low response.

Step 4 – Results

ResultsAs result you should see:

- The frequency response plotted on a scale with dB as vertical axis.- The time response with linear vertical axis and time in milliseconds (ms).- The phase response with phase in degrees between -180 and 180 on the vertical axis.- The group delay.

Step 5 – Time Window Check

Time Window CheckCheck that the time window starts at the beginning of the impulse response (the direct sound) as shown in the picture.

It should be detected automatically. If not, the phase response will be very steep.

You can move the lower time window limit manually by dragging the mouse at the yellow vertical line as shown in the figure.

Push the Finished button to close this wizard.
