Room Acoustics – Decay Curve (Schroeder)

Step 1 – Measuring Decay Curve

Measuring Decay CurveMeasuring the decay curve is a simple task with WinMLS.

If you have been using older equipment, you will be see that you do not need to do a separate measurement for each octave band anymore. The filtering is done as post-processing.

WinMLS uses new technology that covers all octave bands in one single measurement.

To display the FAQ on the room acoustics part of WinMLS, click help.

Step 2 – Perform the Measurement

Perform the MeasurementMeasuring the decay curve is done the same way as measuring the reverberation time.

Therefore, you may use the guide to measure reverberation time. Click help to open this guide.

Step 3 – Decay Curve Plot

Decay Curve PlotAs default in this setup, the decay curve is displayed in octave bands in the plot.

The lower plot displays the time data (impulse response) plotted on a dB y-axis which makes it possible to see the decay as function of time (see picture).

To display the FAQ on the room acoustics part of WinMLS, click help.

After doing this, click the Next > button to continue.

Step 4 – Filter as Post-Processing

Filter as Post-ProcessingYou may change the default filer settings by clicking the rightmost button in the wizard picture.

You find this button in the Active Plot Type Toolbar located in the lower right.

Click help for details on how to use this button. If you think the plot contains too many curves, make sure Filter several bands is not checked.

Use the two F buttons shown in the wizard picture if you wish to increase or decrease the filter frequency.

Step 5 – Overlay Curves

Overlay CurvesTo compare curves from different measurements, make sure PlotOverlay is checked.

Then perform or open from file the measurements you wish to compare.

To change the default curve colors, go to PlotLayoutCurve Styles and Colors….

Step 6 – Legend List

Legend ListIf many curves are displayed, the check boxes in the legend list is useful if you do not want to display all curves in the plot.

In the wizard picture the legend list is moved inside the plot. In this setup, this is not done as default.

For info on how to move the legend list inside the plot or to move the legend list somewhere else, click help.

Step 7 – Customize the Wizard

Customize the WizardIf you want to start the Wizard again, do this from MeasurementWizardStart.

You can easily edit the Wizard to include your own specific instructions from MeasurementWizardEditor….

Click help for more information.

If you want WinMLS to remember changes you have made to the settings, store the setup from SetupStore….

Click the Finish button to exit this wizard.
